Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is one of the easiest and most forgiving aquarium plants available. Here are the care specifications to keep it thriving.
Light
Low to medium light is ideal. Around 6 to 8 hours per day is plenty. Too much light can cause algae to grow on the leaves.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 20 to 28°C (68 to 82°F)
pH: 6.0 to 7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water works best
Planting
Do not bury the rhizome in the substrate. Attach the plant to driftwood, rocks, or décor using thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe glue. The roots will naturally grip over time.
Fertilization
Java Fern feeds from the water column. Occasional liquid fertilizer will improve growth but is not required. Root tabs are unnecessary.
CO2
CO2 injection is not required. The plant grows well in low-tech setups.
Growth Rate
Slow to moderate. New leaves may take a few weeks to appear, but once established it is very reliable.
Maintenance
Remove old or damaged leaves to encourage new growth. Small plantlets may form on mature leaves. These can be gently removed and attached elsewhere to propagate more plants.
Compatibility
Safe with shrimp, snails, and most community fish. It is tough enough to handle mild nibbling from fish that disturb plants.
