Narrow leaf Java Fern (needle leaf java fern)
Couldn't load pickup availability
Java Fern “Narrow Leaf” (Microsorum pteropus ‘Narrow’) is a rare and elegant variety of Java Fern known for its extremely thin, flowing leaves. Previously called Needle Leaf Fern, this form is now more commonly known as Narrow Leaf Java Fern. It is the same striking fern famously used in Takashi Amano’s large showcase aquariums, prized for the way it moves gently in the current.
This variety is still uncommon in Canada, especially in the Toronto area, making it a unique addition to any aquascape. Its fine texture creates a dramatic, natural look without demanding high maintenance.
Light
Low to medium light. 6 to 8 hours daily is ideal. Strong lighting may cause algae to collect on the narrow leaves.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 20 to 28°C (68 to 82°F)
pH: 6.0 to 7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
Planting
Do not bury the rhizome. Attach the plant to rocks, driftwood, or décor using thread or aquarium-safe glue. It will naturally anchor itself over time.
Fertilization
Feeds from the water column. Occasional liquid fertilizer helps but is not required. Root tabs are not necessary.
CO2
Not required. It grows well in low-tech aquariums.
Growth Rate
Slow to moderate. Once established, it is extremely stable and long-lasting.
Maintenance
Trim damaged or algae-covered leaves as needed. Baby plants often grow on mature leaves and can be propagated easily.
Compatibility
Excellent for shrimp tanks and community aquariums. Provides fine shelter for fry and shy species, and tolerates mild disturbance from fish.
1 portion includes 5-7 nodes at least.
